Oh, be that guy, we're good with criticism (g).

I think the approach we took (it's been awhile) was the same as the rest of the podcasts: how did this work as a story? As Alastair kept telling us, it is a British cultural phenom, but we really weren't interested in culture or why it had such impact. We just wanted to figure out what the hell was going on in the story, and we couldn't find a throughline. (I really have to listen to this again; I could be remembering this completely wrong.)

So you're absolutely right, we ignored the context. I think we always ignored the context in all of the films because what we were focusing on was how the story was put together. There are perfectly plotted stories that die on the screen (and on the page) so we never thought that good craft automatically meant good story. But the craft was so bad here that we kept trying to figure out how to fix it, missing, as you point out, the fact that it's an important movie because of its cultural impact. We didn't care, we just wanted to talk about craft.

I don't want to be that guy, but here goes.

I don't like the Italian Job, I never have. In fact there are a whole host of British classics that I take umbridge with like The Italian Job and Damnbusters. But I feel like this discussion was poorly focused, the Italian Job is just not a good film for creative discussion in terms of writing a heist. Unless your sole intent was to look at a film that fails all of the criteria you've set for a heist.

It is fascinating however to look at as a cultural artefact, this film is so telling of British culture in the late sixties. A lot of Caines films from this era are. Get Carter is fascinating in terms of its context and so is Alfie in the way that it brilliantly subverts the age of 'swinging Britain'. I suppose what I'm trying to express is how I feel that context was largely ignored in this episode.

Ps. I've only recently come across this podcast and am tearing through them as fast as I can and they are for the most part fantastic.

Totally disagree. I love their movies and actively seek them out. I don't find the Coen Brothers "too much work." With all the trash that Hollywood is producing, all I can say is, please, can I have more quality movies like those that the Coen Brothers produce? I don't hate the actors they pick; far from it. I really enjoy their casting, their plotlines, their, as you say, adsurdity. Life is a series of both dark and light, absurd and comic versus dark. They find both the absurd and comic and dark in their characters and blend them in these amazing ways, like no one has ever done it before. I am always surprised and never bored with the Coen Brothers. And I can't see anyone else playing The Dude except for Jeff Bridges. I certainly don't feel any of the characters were "kneecapped" by the lack of a strong antagonist. Phillip Seymour Hoffman in this movie as a mastermind would have runined the movie. The Dude was up against some serious players here, but it was the way he played it, and who he was, and the way events unfolded. I simply love this movie.

Jennifer, you really thought The Frighteners was bad? I love that movie. I think it's got great characters and great humor. It is borderline (or over the border) absurdist, and that's not some people's cup of tea. Admittedly the CGI sucks but that's just a product of it's time (it is more than fifteen years old now and didn't have the highest budget then), and if you can get past it there are some genuinely creepy moments the first few times you watch the movie. I wouldn't suggest anyone skip it, though if you're not a fan of jumping out of your skin once or twice I would suggest you watch it with the lights on.

Saved this podcast for a rainy day, it's really raining. It's Cary Grant which means a lot gets forgiven, even he lies, but he does save her life. His persona meant a lot would be forgiven. It would be interesting to read the novelization of the screenplay for comparison. One of my favourite mystery films with CG. Haven't watched it in a while. Isn't there a scene where she says,"You know what's wrong with you?" and he says,"what" and she says, "nothing." All is over-looked or forgiven.
I'm soooo very far behind in viewing and posting as life has been elevated to LIFE recently. I vaguely remember renting Fletch from the video store when I had a Betamax and watching it one night at a friends house because my mom hates Chevy Chase. She still does but I think he's grown into his skills. This, sadly, is not a great vehicle for either a comedy or a mystery.

You mentioned the V.I. Warshawski movie several times. I had that on a loop my senior year in college while working on my thesis on women in detective fiction. It truly has flaws that I don't think purists of the books would ever forgive, but it's not another Fletch. It's more of the hair-tossing, tight jean, and leave out essential characters issues - as I recall. I could be really wrong though - that was going on 20yrs ago and time has not been kind to my memory in some ways:)

I liked this movie a lot. I agree that the whole opening sequence could have been cut, for me that would have made this a better movie. The actual mystery I think we know why Mikey is killed once you see Maitland or at least once you see the bonds in the warehouse, so compared to comething like Hot Fuzz the mystery is figured out too early.

I've always liked this movie, and as a comedy it does it's job. I like Eddie Murphy in it. This movie reminds me of how funny he is. I think the thing that for they did the best was the realtionship between the beverly hils cops and Axel. So for me as a mystery it doesn't really work, but for the comedy it does.

Two questions:

How did I miss the return of PopD???? This was one of my absolute favorite online discussions, and I thought (apparently mistakenly) it was on indefinite hiatus.

And how do I figure out what movie is being shown next?

SOOOOO glad to see this series is back!

Heh, heh, heh. The duck. That was me. Well, I hope Jenny feels better. Allergies are killer this year. If she wants a good pick-me-up tell her hot tea and Kdrama, it's what gets me through.

I can't believe I've never seen Beverly Hills Cop before. Any of them. I think my movie history must be lacking. Now though, I look back and wonder, have I ever actually seen an entire Eddie Murphy movie? Um... I might have to go with no.

Oh, well, then we have ducks.
Actually, there are a lot of ducks on the river, so we do have ducks. But the windows weren't open, so I don't think that's what you heard. Unless one of them landed on the deck. I have a glass door in my bedroom that leads out to the deck, and I looked up one day and two turkey buzzards were out there sunning themselves. Kind of cool.
You know, I haven't read the books (and now uh...won't be), but it seemed like a drastically different movie to me since I wasn't comparing it to the book. Mostly it seemed fine by me. Sure, it had plenty of Silly Chevy Chase Moments (like any Robin Williams or Adam Sandler movie...not overly thrilled with that, but it seems to be a requirement of the entertainment industry), but beyond that it pretty much worked for me and I was entertained, even though I seem to forget most of the plot after I've watched the movie every time. Which is why I re-rented this even though I last watched it a few months ago.

This is off topic but I saw it and thought the PopD peeps would appreciate it. This is the product description for "When Harry Met Sally" off of Amazon:

"Two Manhattan careerists take 12 years to figure out they love each other."

Just me or did they manage to make a totally charming and wonderful movie sound totally dull and boring? That takes talent, right?

In other news, I LOVE Hot Fuzz. Saw it in the theater several times, as I recall. And I still remember the first time I saw it where I didn't know not to look when they kill Tim Messenger. I also love the black humor in this. "Ow. This really hurts." You're laughing like crazy and you feel so awful but you don't care. Definitely humor and mystery done right.

It was interesting for me because watching it this time with the writer POV I could see where the lack of a strong antagonist really kneecapped a lot of great characters. I think they knew it which is why they tacked on the confrontation with nihilists at the end. The confrontation with the Big Lebowski just wasn't enough because he was such a weak antagonist.
They shoulda made Phillip Seymour Hoffman a mastermind.

Eh, I think Clue is still leaps better than the previous two. They *tried* to do a story, but given the gimmick, they had to deal with the gimmick. Especially when you have 3 potential scenarios and whatever you do in the middle has to sorta work with that. (And frankly, everyone following Wadsworth as he ran through acting out the entire movie smacks of "we seriously had to pad this thing." GET ON WITH IT, indeed!).

I think maybe the problem here is that so far you've picked shows that had a gimmick. Maybe uh, look for ones that aren't so gimmicked. I'll even suck it up and watch "The Big Lebowski" even though I am the only person on the planet who doesn't love it, and turned it off halfway through because I just wasn't getting why it was so awesome and funny. I didn't get what was going on (especially any time Maude does anything) and I only chuckled here and there. Sigh. Oh well, a fourth boner for me will be nothing :P

I haven't seen the Miss Marple movies, but those are supposed to be comedic. That might be an idea? And I'd be down for Arsenic and Old Lace. But please don't watch "Nothing But Trouble." It is seriously one of the shittiest fucking flicks I ever saw in my life. The only part of it that isn't godawful was the musical bit randomly put in the middle.

Oh look, Wikipedia has suggestions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Comedy_mystery_films

Oh, and so I remember to mention this before Lebowski:

Eh, I think Clue is still leaps better than the previous two. They *tried* to do a story, but given the gimmick, they had to deal with the gimmick. Especially when you have 3 potential scenarios and whatever you do in the middle has to sorta work with that. (And frankly, everyone following Wadsworth as he ran through acting out the entire movie smacks of “we seriously had to pad this thing.” GET ON WITH IT, indeed!).

I think maybe the problem here is that so far you’ve picked shows that had a gimmick. Maybe uh, look for ones that aren’t so gimmicked. I’ll even suck it up and watch “The Big Lebowski” even though I am the only person on the planet who doesn’t love it, and turned it off halfway through because I just wasn’t getting why it was so awesome and funny. I didn’t get what was going on (especially any time Maude does anything) and I only chuckled here and there. Sigh. Oh well, a fourth boner for me will be nothing

I haven’t seen the Miss Marple movies, but those are supposed to be comedic. That might be an idea? And I’d be down for Arsenic and Old Lace. But please don’t watch “Nothing But Trouble.” It is seriously one of the shittiest fucking flicks I ever saw in my life. The only part of it that isn’t godawful was the musical bit randomly put in the middle.

I love Clue as a movie. It's wonderful (I absolutely adore Madeline Kahn in it as well as Michael Mckean) and it always makes me laugh. I agree though it's not a great movie for structured mystery and to learn about the genre.

I just watched Murder By Death tonight, and it's not going to make the cut, either, although it has some excellent moments in it. It's just a comedy pretending to be a mystery, nobody actually cares whodunnit.

This is a tough genre. And for some reason Foul Play is impossible to find anywhere reasonably. I loved that movie.

Streaming is great, I agree, but since we're not doing the chat I don't think it's as crucial. I think with a lot of these I'm working off memory. It's not perfect but since I've seen them so many times and I saw them before my memory went wonky it's working pretty well for me so far. On the other hand I'm a person that has a huge number of DVDs sitting in my basement because when it's a movie that I absolutely adore I grab it and hold onto it and watch it all the time. In fact, I'm pretty sure Clue is down there! I'll be interested to see how it fairs this week. I liked it as a flick but I wasn't watching it for structure, etc., just for entertainment. Now I'm wondering if my favorite parody/humorous mystery of all time - Murder By Death - would stand up to a PopD grilling? I'm not so sure anymore.

Yeah, it's kind of a bummer that we got to this one after High Anxiety. I would love to watch Fletch or Foul Play; I wonder if this rule about only streamable content is working against us? Would streamable-when-possible be a better policy? Although we'd have to rummage up the DVDs, and it's very common on PopD night for us to realize we don't have the DVD and then just watch it on Netflix or Amazon.

I don't know - what do you guys think?

I have seen the movie version of Fletch. I remember it being good. I think they stuck pretty close to the book, which mostly makes up for casting Chevy Chase. I was hoping that would be on the list, but I guess it isn't streaming anywhere? Too bad about Foul Play, I love it.
I don't think they even cared to have a plot in this movie, really. It's all about the gag. I don't remember what the plot was, I think it ended with Nazi cheese. And once Juliet disappears from the movie, it's even duller because there's no other live actors. They make the gag look good by the filming, but is there any reason to watch it? To stay interested in watching it? Nooooo, there really isn't. Especially since he has to summarize a whole lot, I kept forgetting what character were who, and I didn't care.

Also, note to the male writers of this movie: if you wake up to find a guy you don't know feeling up your chest, screaming and/or slapping (it's the 40's) are highly likely to ensue. COME ON.

There's really only two good moments in the movie: Rachel Ward's lines about (a) how to operate a phone, and (b) the penis rearrangement. And those aren't even that good.

I think it's interesting to look at different versions of anything to see what directors/writers do with it. Lani and I watched the remake of Cactus Flower and liked it better than the original. THe reviews were so scathing for the remake of Charade we didn't even bother. I vaguely remember The Fugitive as a TV program when I was a kid, but the remake of that into a movie was terrific. But the remake of the TV Avengers was just awful.

Lani and I watched the remake of Cactus Flower and liked it better than the original. THe reviews were so scathing for the remake of Charade we didn’t even bother.
Yikes, I'm behind. And I'm still behind because I wasn't paying attention and got the Mystery! version of this, rather than the film version. Still, having listened to the podcast, there seems to have been some real differences between the film version (correct version) and the Mystery! version. In the Mystery! version, there was no mention whatsoever of a diamond, and Poirot's presence on the island was put down to a proscribed trip from his doctor.

I only really mention this because this made me really think about mediums that stories work in and how the method of storytelling may work quite well in one medium, but adaptation is necessary for a different medium. Which, I guess is kind of what PopD is about? I've noticed it before, specifically with the movie "Wanted" (James McAvoy! Angelina Jolie!) I'd not read the graphic novel the movie was based on before going to see it, and while it's not the height of film making, it's an enjoyable flick that works as a movie. I later picked up the graphic novel on which it was based and actually liked the movie MORE because I could see how beautifully the filmmakers had restructured the narrative to make it work AS A MOVIE vs. botching up the graphic novel -> movie transfer.

Anyway, I do need to track down the film version, if just to compare/contrast for myself against the televised Mystery! version. It's probably the case that the reasoning for Poirot's presence in the televised version was done to bring in more of Detective Hastings' character development than in the film. And what was or was not included from the original source as well. Eh, either way, it was fun way to spend an evening, but I'm sad I didn't get to see Maggie Smith and Diana Rigg!

I think he did all right in the end. He was next in line to be captain, so he had some power. He's not prosecuting anybody, they're all dead, so it won't be a high profile court case. And his family had no problem when he called them in to get the records. I have a feeling that family trumps the blue line in this case. But yeah, I love everything you said, too.

I do think he was always a good guy, that he never crossed his own line. What he realizes is that you can't make your own line, that the little stuff turns into the big stuff, but he was never tempted to deal drugs or murder, he just looked at his job like it was a game and he was the good guy so it was okay to cheat a little. He really turned from boy to man during the story, but i think she grows from girl to woman, too, and not just because she finally has great sex. She sees everything as clear cut, and he takes her into a world that's all shades of gray.

I just freaking love this movie.

This is one of my favorite movies. I've loved it since the first time I saw it, but I was always really focused on the romance, and then later on, on Remy's character arc, so I never realized how strong the mystery is. I mean, when you go back and see it again, there's Andre reading a book about Tahiti like 40 minutes in.

I find this a really interesting contrast with LA Confidential, as they both focus on corruption. But noir doesn't allow its heroes to actually find redemption, and this one manages to make the point about the slippery slope and how important it is not to cross lines without doing horrible things to the protagonist at the end. Which may be why I prefer this.

@Jennifer: I too love the puking scene. I love the "even with your head in the toilet you still want to talk business" line. The way he says it is so sweet; that's clearly something he loves about her.

I watched this two times in a row. Standout moments for me:

(a) Anne sees the purse-snatcher, immediately swings her bag at him to trip him up, and grabs his ankle and won't let go for anything. That is a tough girl, right there. I love her for that. (Also amusing is when Remy tells her to stay there and the little gesture she does like "Well, okay.")

(b) The puking scene. The guy barely knows her and yet he's sitting painfully precariously on the tub squeezing in there while she's puking and wiping her mouth? That's love, baby. I wouldn't want to make out with someone with a mouthful of toothpaste, to be honest, but still sweet.

(c) The not-perfect-at-first-go sex scene is totally reminiscent of many Jenny Crusie sex scenes :) Now I finally know where "your luck's about to change, cher" comes from too.

(d) Remy is a grown-ass hot man and a cop AND HE UNASHAMEDLY SLEEPS WITH A STUFFED SQUEAKY TOY GATOR. That is adorable. He actually cuddles with it while alone. Hell, he took it to bed. She wakes up the next morning and there's the gator squeaking, and she's not even surprised? She was aware of that gator during the nookie. Hmmmmm.

I don't know if he was wooing her for political/distraction movies, out of sheer confidence that she'd never go after the likes of him, or smitten at first sight (probably a combo of the first two), but it's adorable. Dude is smitten right off the bat and keeps it up even after the point where he feels betrayed. Wow.

When you think about it, this movie has a lot deeper inclinations than you guys went into. He goes into this movie thinking he's a good guy and she forces him to see that he's not really being one, and then he turns into one because she revealed to him that she thought he could do better. (Much like a line on Farscape, but you guys wouldn't know about that one.)

I kept thinking about the whole Adrian Schoolcraft thing (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/414/right-to-remain-silent, also http://schoolcraftjustice.com/), because he was another cop who was proving corruption within the PD. Unfortunately in Schoolcraft's case, he pretty much screwed over his career for life (and probably any other prospects for work, I guess) by doing this. Now, we don't see the outcome of Remy's situation here--for all I know what with the dead cops, maybe nothing came of it, maybe there was a situation like the end of LA Confidential-- but I seriously wondered at the end if Remy had just 100% trashed his career and police family. They've got that cute scene at the end where they got married (kind of makes me wonder if they tacked that on at the last minute, but it makes me happy so whatever), but they're alone in that moment. There's no giant crowd of people partying with them. It made me wonder if Remy still had that family to celebrate with any more, and I suspect the answer is "probably not."

Love takes you strange places sometimes. It made Remy a better man, but I wonder what happened after that. Not that I'll ever know, of course.

He goes into this movie thinking he’s a good guy and she forces him to see that he’s not really being one, and then he turns into one because she revealed to him that she thought he could do better. (Much like a line on Farscape, but you guys wouldn’t know about that one.)

I kept thinking about the whole Adrian Schoolcraft thing (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/414/right-to-remain-silent, also http://schoolcraftjustice.com/), because he was another cop who was proving corruption within the PD. Unfortunately in Schoolcraft’s case, he pretty much screwed over his career for life (and probably any other prospects for work, I guess) by doing this. Now, we don’t see the outcome of Remy’s situation here–for all I know what with the dead cops, maybe nothing came of it, maybe there was a situation like the end of LA Confidential– but I seriously wondered at the end if Remy had just 100% trashed his career and police family. They’ve got that cute scene at the end where they got married (kind of makes me wonder if they tacked that on at the last minute, but it makes me happy so whatever), but they’re alone in that moment. There’s no giant crowd of people partying with them. It made me wonder if Remy still had that family to celebrate with any more, and I suspect the answer is “probably not.”

Love takes you strange places sometimes. It made Remy a better man, but I wonder what happened after that. Not that I’ll ever know, of course.

LOL, Stephanie. You are obviously way smarter than me! Still, I'm glad, because I really enjoyed being surprised. :)

And I'm so glad you liked it! Jenny and I spent so much of this podcast sounding really shocked that we liked it, and still feeling apologetic for inflicting it on you guys. But I really do think it's good! I made Alastair watch it and he liked it, too. So it's not a fluke - it's a good movie! :) Yay!

Roger Ebert was wrong. I figured this would be the movie equivalent of MacArthur Park - which is the worst song ever. No question. I think the humor is a lot like Murder By Death and I LOVE that movie so much.

Oh, I'd fall for Cary Grant pretty much immediately. That didn't seem unusual:) The lies, yeah - that's problematic, but it's fiction.

I liked this much better than my previous attempt. I had no idea it was so funny - and smart. I think it was the smart factor that kept me involved, too. I will say that this was a mystery that I figured out well before the detective - and that pretty much never happens. Hiding the object in plain sight is ancient wisdom and is even the way Agatha Christie began her career with Hercule Poirot. Just one of those things that sticks with me.

I kept thinking she should just blow out the matches, too. And May, I agree about the lying - usually that's a deal-breaker for me. But for some reason, I can forgive it here, the same way I overlook Audrey Hepburn not knowing anything about the man she married... and the same way I overlook the fact that she falls in love with Cary Grant pretty much immediately, while he is lying to her. I think because of the time, I can overlook it and enjoy the rest of the story, because aside from those niggles, the rest really delivers. For me, at least.

@ Jennifer you know I had an averse reaction to this as well. The main thing that tripped me up was that he keeps lying to her and she keeps forgiving him, and it just kind of pulled me out of the story. It was the first time I had ever seen this movie, so maybe i just had a wierd reaction.

I thought that it was a good mystery, and the clues were all given. I thought it was great how they developed the mystery I just had a wierd reaction to the romance in this -maybe I'm a mutant?

I haven't listened to the podcast yet so I'm just going on my thoughts and the comments...
@Jennifer - definitely with you on the matches. That's exactly what I thought.

I liked the movie but I'm not a big Audrey Hepburn fan. She's beautiful to look at but that's about it for me. In fact, I've tried to watch this movie several times and this is the first time I've made it past the 20 min mark. I finally 'got it' and it really was the comedy and the banter that pulled me all the way through.

I love this movie. Part of it may be that I watched over and over with my mom when I was little, so I have a childhood attachment to it. But mostly I just find it really fun. The thing with the matches...as I watched it this time, I was thinking she should take that cigarette out of his mouth and stick it in his eye (Romancing the Stone, anyone?). But I can see how you'd freak out if someone was threatening to set you on fire, especially if having your life threatened is a new experience. I read the novelization like five years ago, and I think he has them married for less than a year, so that might explain why she doesn't know him well, but not knowing ANYTHING is a bit much. His having exactly $250,000 after 20 years was odd. I would have thought he'd have gotten interest on it or made investments, or whatever, so that's the only thing I really found confusing, but I like the rest so much I don't really care.

I find this...odd. Yes, the plotting is easy, and the ending of the movie is a hoot (Cary's cross-eyed expression when she walks in, "That's the last name I'd get stuck with," her line about how we'll have to have all these boys so we can name them after you...). But at times I just... I don't know. Mostly I just don't get how Audrey Hepburn is married to a guy she knows NOTHING about whatsoever (how do you not know anything? I kept thinking of "Farthinggale" again) and doesn't love and doesn't give two hoots about compared to her lost furnishings. How the hell do you get into that situation? I guess we're supposed to assume she's just nuts because she then wants to marry a guy who changes his name every 20 minutes, but it annoyed me.

Also: note to Audrey that if a guy is torturing you by lighting matches, waving them in your faces for 5-10 seconds before he drops them in your lap, repeatedly-- you could always BLOW THEM OUT. I'm just saying.

I was watching the commentary and they said something about Walter Matthau playing it under the wire with being goofy and funny so that you didn't figure out he was the killer. That certainly worked, and then I didn't red-flag him until he assigned the meeting place. Silly me, isn't everyone but her having some sort of twist here?

Eh...maybe something's wrong with me because I don't love most of these movies.

PS: Everyone should see Vincent Price in His Kind of Woman. He's a supporting character, but he's still the best part of the movie - hilarious ham actor with all the best lines :)

I read the book before I saw this, and I think it colored how I saw the movie. I noticed all the things they kept and all the things they changed. I re-read it so often because I love McPherson and the premise.

I felt like they started with Mark, but then I was expecting Waldo's POV from the first scene in the book. Once they get out of the bathroom, Mark is the one asking questions, stirring the pot with Shelby, confronting the aunt about her relationship with the fiance. Waldo is just along for the ride making sarcastic remarks. The hideously long flashback is also straight out of the book, I think. Maybe where they went wrong here was trying to be faithful to the book for the first half and then throwing parts of it out in the second half? I suspect they were cutting it down for time.

That episode of Moonlighting is one of the ones I actually like. Been a while since I saw it, but I remember thinking of it as "the Laura episode." The scene with Maddie listening to the tapes was really good.

It's really a classic film, right up there with The Maltese Falcon at being well-known without people having seen it. And the central premise is a strong one emotionally--a detective investigating a woman's murder and falling in love with her as he discovers the kind of person she way--but the movie doesn't execute it well.

I don't know this movie at all. It sounds interesting, but by your ratings I can maybe not go in search of it. : ) However, if it ever came up on Turner Classics then I would definitely watch it.

It's in the same time period, but it's not noir. The worldview is different, the hardboiled detective is a softie, and the heroine is (in theory) perfect. So Laura is noir the way The Thin Man is noir: same time period, different worldview.

There were times while I watched this that I thought The Big Sleep made more sense. I suspect that was because Harry kept rewinding during his narration and they kept stopping for his romance with Harmony. I'm still confused about how one makes the jump from "no underwear on the corpse" to "mental hospital" though. I mean, I understand that you CAN get there, I just don't buy that you make the leap within 5 seconds of hearing the information. I did like the fact that they used Raymond Chandler titles to for each day. And Harry and Perry are awesome, I love all their scenes.

I hate to say this since Jenny and Lani are both so tired of noir, but, well...Laura is definitely noir. In fact I think it's more noir than Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I love it, but I have some doubts about how the romance is going to be rated. The mystery is excellent though, so that's something. Can't wait for The Big Easy - one of my favorites.

A while back I mentioned how the Bridesmaids trailer looked like wreck of bad characters, except, hey look at that, it blew up & everybody loved it. So now I watched it & it's actually great. Interesting characters, funny/painful awkward moments and lots of plain funny scenes. Plus, if you like Hot Tub Time Machine, there's a scatological scene for you.
